FAQs
what is play therapy?
Children do not always possess the language to express themselves like adults do in traditional talk therapy. Play therapy utilizes toys, a child’s natural form of expression, to help them more freely express their feelings through toys rather than words. The Association for Play Therapy (APT) defines play therapy as "the systematic use of a theoretical model to establish an interpersonal process wherein trained play therapists use the therapeutic powers of play to help clients prevent or resolve psychosocial difficulties and achieve optimal growth and development." Child-Centered play therapy is an evidenced based mental health intervention for ages 3-12.
HOW many sessions, how often?
Research shows a play therapy intervention should consist of at least 12 sessions, but could take more. Often, things may get worse before they get better! Think about how traditional talk therapy for an adult can be difficult and stressful working toward a therapeutic change. The same rules apply here even though it may not look the same! Consistency is key! 50 minute weekly sessions are recommended, however, we can talk about this at the initial parent intake and come up with a schedule that best fits your child’s needs.
